Monday Reading (Oct. 22nd, 2012)

Book Pumpkins by Hanna Gritton (Etsy)
In this weekly event hosted by One Persons Journey Through a World Of Books where we discuss what we've been reading this week (and, occasionally, what we haven't).

The only reading I've gotten done lately was during the Dewey's Readathon - which was wonderful and fabulous and I cannot wait for the next one. But that said, I wish I had had more time to read this week!

Currently Reading:
  • Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead - For some reason I am having trouble getting into this. First time that's happened with a Mead book...
Finished during these past two weeks:
  • Defiance by Lili St. Crow - Good, but not great.
  • Vampire Academy Graphic Novel by Richelle Mead - While I'm still not a graphic novel person, I really did enjoy this!
  • Chain Reaction by Simone Elkeles - This book was what us fandomites know as crack. It falls into the so-bad-but-so-good-for-me category.

Up next from my TBR pile:
  • Blue-Blooded Vamp by Jaye Wells - I ADORE this series so I am both super excited to see how it ends and super sad about never getting to read another book about Sabine!!

Monday Reading (Oct. 8th, 2012)

Book Pumpkins by Hanna Gritton (Etsy)
In this weekly event hosted by One Persons Journey Through a World Of Books where we discuss what we've been reading this week (and, occasionally, what we haven't).

Happy October everyone! Tis the season for themed challenges and readathons, and I know a lot of you are reading spooky and paranormal books this month. I, for one, tend to read those sorts of books all the time, so I'm still trying to work out how to make this October a little different for me...

Currently Reading:
  • Sea Witch by Virginia Kantra (goodreads) - I started reading this book months ago and am trying to finish it now. I put it down meaning to get back to it, but fell into a funk. Not sure if I am in the mood for PNR right now, but I'm giving it another go.
Finished these past two weeks:
  • Darkness Falls by Cate Tiernan (my review) - I really enjoyed this book! I was actually rather surprised by how much I liked it, seeing as how "meh" I was about the first book.
  • Breathe by Sarah Crossan (goodreads) - My review for this one will be out this week. BAD SCIENCE warning, people.
  • The Calling by Kelley Armstrong (goodreads) - WHAT TOOK ME SO LONG?? This book was fantastic - albeit not as mind-blowing as Kelley's previous YA novels.

Up next from my TBR pile:
  • I want to do something extra spooky for this Halloween, so I think I will be reading Zombies Don't Cry by Rusty Fischer (goodreads) next. Hopefully I will get that done by this Friday, as I have other books planned for Dewey's Readathon (whoot!) this weekend.

Hope you're all reading books you love - and hope everyone is signed up for the Readathon this weekend!

Monday Reading (Sept. 24th, 2012)

I've actually had a good reading week for a change! Instead of not finishing a number of mediocre books, I've finished one stellar novel and have started on another. Things are looking up!

Currently Reading:
  • Darkness Falls by Cate Tiernan - The first 30-or-so pages of this weren't stellar. But once the descriptions of people's clothing stopped and the hardcore "I'm in rehab" angst started, I really began to enjoy myself!
Finished this week:
  • River Marked by Patricia Briggs - Stellar as usual. Expect a review for this one tomorrow.

Monday Reading: All Hallows' Eve 2011

In this weekly event hosted by One Persons Journey Through a World Of Books where we discuss what we've been reading this week (and, occasionally, what we haven't).

I hope everyone is having a spooktacular Halloween today, with lots of goblins, ghouls, and ghosts in their novels. I have quite a few supernatural creatures in my current reading pile, unsurprisingly!

Currently Reading:
  • Fins are Forever by Tera Lynn Childs - The writing in this book is so very middle-grade... it makes my brain alternate between zen and GOD-just-use-3-syllables-already. Enjoying it nonetheless. I reviewed the first book last year: Forgive My Fins.
  • Dead as a Doornail by Charlaine Harris - I always expect these books to be something like the TV series (which I have grown to loathe) and am always surprised when they are completely different. Charlaine is such a soft, funny, Southern author.

Recently(ish) Finished:
  • Pure by Julianna Baggott - I loved this book. Seriously, I loved it. I am actively thinking about hosting a book tour for my ARC because I just want to SHARE my love.
  • My Soul to Save by Rachel Vincent - Good but not fantastic installment in the Soul Screamers series.
  • Dark Goddess by Sarwat Chadda - The book was fantastic! It was much better than the first in the series... and since the first was great, that's really saying something. The thought of there being no more Billi SanGreal novels makes me very very sad. :(

Up next from the TBR pile:
  • I've come to a conclusion rather late in the year... and that is that I should probably read one book from each of the series I'm reading. And guess what? There are a tonne of series I am part way through that I haven't picked up this year. How on earth am I going to remember the plot if I wait a billion years before getting to the next in the series? *worries* So, I'll probably be reading some Richelle Mead as I have read nothing by her this year.

Monday Reading (Oct. 10th, 2011)

In this weekly event hosted by One Persons Journey Through a World Of Books where we discuss what we've been reading this week (and, occasionally, what we haven't).

Well, it is finally autumn here in Europe and that means lots of curling up with novels and tea while watching the leaves fall. Here's what I've been snuggled up with since I last checked in...

Currently reading:
  • Pure by Julianna Baggott - This book is amazing. Insanely amazing. Amazingly amazing. It's terrifying and thought-provoking and just utter genius. I can't wait for everyone to read it!
Recently finished:
  • The Two Towers: Book 3 by J.R.R. Tolkien - I finished the first book in Two Towers, and have decided to set it aside for now. I feel like taking a bit of a break before starting on Frodo and Sam's journey.
  • The Eternal Ones by Kirsten Miller - Although this started out rather strong,  it ended in a flaming pit of epic terrible. God, this book was just atrocious. I have a lump from all the times I banged the book to my head in complete disbelief. Couldn't have made this stuff up...

Monday Reading (Sept. 26th, 2011)

Out of the pond... by InertiaK
In this weekly event hosted by One Persons Journey Through a World Of Books where we discuss what we've been reading this week (and, occasionally, what we haven't).

I brought one of my mother's dogs to live with me, so it's going to be an... interesting week. I hope that she completely kisses up to my roommates so they can look after her whenever I'm not here! *hopes* She's lovely, so I can't imagine anyone not loving her...

Currently Reading:
  • The Two Towers by J. R. R. Tolkien - I am almost through the first book in Two Towers... and I think I will put it down there. It is brilliant, of course, but I not too sure I am up to the claustrophobic Sam/Frodo/Gollum business.
  • The Eternal Ones by Kirsten Miller - I really really didn't think I would like this book. I bought it on a whim and have dreaded picking it up. And guess what? It's pretty good! Colour me surprised.

Finished this week:

  • State of Wonder by Ann Patchett - Even though I loathed the main character, Patchett delivered a beautiful and engaging novel. Not my favourite of her books, but still fantastic.

Monday Reading (Sept. 19th, 2011)

Watch out thar, matey!
In this weekly event hosted by One Persons Journey Through a World Of Books where we discuss what we've been reading this week (and, occasionally, what we haven't).

Arg! Today be the International Talk Like a Pirate Day! So make aye you speak like t'worst pirate around!

Currently reading:
  • State of Wonder by Ann Patchett -Yep, I'm still reading this. While I have serious problems with any mention of animal testing, it is still an Ann Patchett book. So yes, I am loving it. But not as much as her other novels!
  • The Two Towers by J. R. R. Tolkien - Does anyone remember how I participated in the LotR Readalong last year? Well, I made it through The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, but I never finished any of the other books. But I'm working on it now!

Finished this week:
  • Beastly by Alex Finn - The only thing that saves this book is the fact that it is a re-telling of one of my favourite tales. Other than that, I can't say I'd run out to get it...
  • 13 to Life by Shannon Delany - This book is an extremely disjointed, but unexpectedly entertaining, werewolf version of Twilight. Reviewing it will be tough!

Up next from the TBR pile:
  • I really just need to finish the books that I am reading! That is my GOAL.

Monday Reading (Sept. 5th, 2011)

In this weekly event hosted by One Persons Journey Through a World Of Books where we discuss what we've been reading this week (and, occasionally, what we haven't).

Currently reading:
  • Beastly by Alex Finn - Upon reading this I came to the following realisation: the Beast really is a jerk. I mean, yeah, I know he was mean to start off with - hence the curse - but I always just thought he just made a stupid mistake. Seeing everything from his POV? It has really changed my perspective!
  • State of Wonder by Ann Patchett - Now that the main character has arrived in Brazil, this book is really picking up!

Finished this week:
  • Hourglass by Claudia Gray - Wow, did I ever dislike this book. It has been a long time since I've loathed characters as much as I did Hourglass'. Read my review here.
  • Academy 7 by Anne Osterlund - I LOVED this book. My only regret is that there isn't a second or a third in the series for me to pick up! This book was an absolute joy to read: YA Science Fiction with a fantastic relationship at its core. Can't recommend it enough.

Up next from my TBR Pile of DOOM:
  • Maybe some Sarah Dessen? I bought Last Chance a while ago as an introduction to her writing. I hope she's as good as everyone makes her out to be!

Monday Reading (August 1st, 2011)

In this weekly event hosted by One Persons Journey Through a World Of Books where we discuss what we've been reading this week (and, occasionally, what we haven't).

I had such a mangled reading week: one fabulous book and one epically disappointing book. I had been on a reading high, and now I am way down in the reading dumps... life is hard when you don't have a good book in hand!

Currently Reading:
  • Heat Stroke by Rachel Caine - This is book 2 in her Weather Warden series and, while I am enjoying it, I remember absolutely nothing from Ill Wind! Who were the bad guys? Why was Jo on the run? When did David become the one-true-love? I wish I had answers to these questions... but apparently one can read Heat Stroke without remembering these details. There's all new plots to forget!
Finished this week:
  • Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs - With every book my adoration of Patricia Briggs grows stronger. Cry Wolf was absolutely fantastic in that "Wow. I am incapable of reviewing this" sort of way!
  • The Society of S by Susan Hubbard - After 180 pages of interesting, intellectual writing, Susan Hubbard shoots the book down by making her main character absolutely detestable. I skim-read the rest of this book hoping for improvement... there was none.

Up Next from the TBR pile:
  • Oh dear, I don't know! I know that I want to read Ann Aguirre, Patricia Briggs, Maggie Stiefvater, Kelley Armstrong, and, maybe, some Caitlin Kitteredge... but what should I read? Maybe Kitty and the Midnight Hour by Carrie Vaughn? I loved her short story Amaryllis and have had the book on my TBR pile for almost 2 years!

So tell me, what have you been reading this week?
